Overview:

The Intern is an auxiliary member of the Patterson Engineering, Inc. team responsible for assisting with tasks while learning about the business, company, and industry. They work to develop experience in structural design and drafting while producing project calculations. This role is accountable to the Project Engineer.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete engineering analysis and design of wood, masonry, concrete, and steel structures using Excel, RISA, EnerCalc, and other software.
  • Compile initial plan mark-ups showing member design sizes for occupancy loading criteria.
  • Perform review & Yellow Outs of project documents to verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Execute initial review of shop drawings and submittals to confirm accordance with Patterson Engineering, Inc. plans and specifications.
  • Study, determine, and communicate project load criteria, layouts, and load-paths with Project Design Team.
  • Assist in drafting and modeling of plans and details as required.
  • Accompany design team to site observation to study construction in practice.
  • Study and learn construction codes and practices through independent research and PEI drawing/detail review.
  • Maintain and comply with company standards and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in ABET accredited BS or MS program in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • 0-5 years relevant experience in structural engineering with state registration as FE/EIT.
  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, theories, and practices as applied to structural design.
  • Working knowledge of RISA, EnerCalc, & Excel, AutoCAD & Revit.
  • Drive to grow and learn through mentorship, coaching, and self-direction.
  • The desire to contribute to the company and the ability to effectively collaborate in a small, team-based organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, excellent verbal, written and decision-making acumen, with the ability to communicate with all levels of colleagues and clients.
